Pre-Operative Eye Exam

Prior to your pre-operative assessment day for LASIK surgery at LASIK Eye Centers, you may decide to have an evaluation done with your own eye care professional. Click here for a pre-operative form for your optometrist.

If you choose to have a pre-operative assessment with your own doctor, you are responsible for the fees.  LASIK Eye Centers will also require you to have a pre-operative assessment at our clinic on or before your LASIK surgery date. We are unable to confirm your eligibility for LASIK surgery or PRK until we have completed our own assessments.

What to expect on the day of your Pre-Operative evaluation

When you first arrive at the clinic, you will be asked to fill out a patient information sheet.  Please allow 2 hours for the complete pre-operative evaluation.

There are two parts to the pre-operative examination at LASIK Eye Centers.

  1. The first part consists of diagnostic testing with the Orbscan, TMS2 and an auto-refractor which will be taken by one of our certified ophthalmic assistants.
  2. Then you’ll meet with one of our optometrists who will measure your refraction. They will dilate your eyes to ensure they are healthy and that you are a suitable candidate for laser surgery.

Please arrange for alternative transportation home after the testing. Your vision will be blurred and you will have difficulty reading and driving.  Your eyes will be dilated for 2 to 4 hours, please remember to bring a pair of sunglasses with you.

In consideration of others and to ensure your visit is as comfortable as possible, please do not bring children with you to LASIK Eye Centers. The duration of your visit will be approximately 2 hours.

LASIK Eye Centers will not be held responsible for any costs incurred for travel, parking, accommodation, lost employment income and/or any additional expenses incurred due to the patient being deemed a non-candidate, requiring re-treatments, re-scheduling, or delays.

You may have a pre-operative evaluation conducted with your own eye care professional.  If you are coming from out-of-town, click here to find out more information about
patient co-management.

Contact Lenses

Contact lenses can warp the corneal surface, which changes the corneal curvature and could lead to an incorrect refraction measurement.  In order to properly calculate the treatment to correct your refractive error, you will have to stop wearing contact lenses at some stage prior to laser eye surgery.  The time interval that you must go without wearing contact lenses depends on the type of lens that you use and the length of time you have used them.

Soft Contact Lenses may not be worn for at least one week prior to the laser eye surgery pre-operative eye exam.  Soft contact lenses may not be worn for at least one week prior to the procedure.

Soft Toric Lenses
may not be worn for at least four weeks prior to the laser eye surgery pre-operative eye exam.  Soft toric lenses may not be worn for at least four weeks prior to the procedure.

Gas Permeable lenses
may not be worn for at least four weeks prior to the laser eye surgery pre-operative eye exam (or 8 weeks if you have worn them for more than 20 years, or 12 weeks if you have worn them for more than 39 years).

Gas permeable lenses may not be worn for at least six weeks prior to the procedure.

True hard lenses (PMMA)
may not be worn for at least twelve (12) weeks prior to the laser eye surgery pre-operative eye exam.  True hard lenses (PMMA) may not be worn for at least twelve weeks prior to the procedure.

Following this advice will decrease the risk of complications and also increase the effectiveness of the
laser eye surgery procedure.
