Ideal Candidate

Are you an ideal candidate for LASIK EYE SURGERY?

A suitable
vision correction candidate meets the following criteria:

  1. Your existing vision must fall within an acceptable correction range. You must not have had a significant change to your glasses or contact lens prescription for the last twelve months.
  2. You must have a vision correction problem.  The differences in vision are measured in diopters, which are degrees of prescription on a range that scales from -12.00 diopters, for severe myopia, to +5.00 diopters for severe hyperopia.
  3. The diopter ranges that LASIK Eye Centers can treat:
    1. Myopia (up to -12.00 Diopters) (Spherical equivalent)
    2. Hyperopia (Up to +5.00 Diopters)(Spherical equivalent)
    3. Astigmatism (Most cases up to -9.00 Diopters)
  4. Cornea thickness - The cornea must have a total thickness of 500 microns or greater, depending on ablation depth (how deep and how round the reshaping needs to be) and diopter range treated. The Bausch & Lomb Zyoptix XP microkeratome creates a flap that is 150 microns thick and each diopter treated results in the removal of approximately 10 microns. To be considered a healthy treatment, the laser must leave a minimum of 250 microns of posterior (behind the flap) thickness after the procedure. Our target is to leave a minimum of 270 to 280 microns of corneal tissue for added stability as well as to have a reserve of tissue if a re-treatment is every required.  Our procedure price includes a life-time re-treatment policy.
  5. Pupil diameter - The diameter of the pupil ideally should be no more than 6.5 mm. However, advances in the laser technology can now work with diameters up to 9.5 mm.
  6. Age - You must be at least 19 years of age.
  7. Health - You must be in good overall health and have good eye health.

Before LASIK Eye Surgery or PRK can be performed; you must have a thorough Pre-Operative Eye Exam with our medical team.  LASIK eye surgery or PRK combined with the WAVEFRONT guided treatment improves your potential for 20/20 vision or better.

Conditions that may make you a questionable candidate for a vision correction procedure include, but are not limited to:

1.       Certain diseases - Auto-immune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, lupus), vascular disease, and uncontrolled diabetes

2.       Eye diseases - You must not suffer from eye diseases (severe glaucoma, cataracts, ocular herpes simplex, amblyopia, strabismus, kerataconus, eye inflammation or infection. Severely dry eyes or excessive corneal disease or scarring.

3.        Pregnant -  If you are pregnant, or attempting to become pregnant

4.       Nursing - Nursing mothers should wait six months after nursing before considering laser eye surgery.

5.       Certain drugs - Acutane (acne), immune-system medications

LASIK Eye Surgery
AND PRK are elective surgical procedures.  The only definitive way to determine if you are an ideal candidate for vision correction surgery is to have a full pre-operative eye exam.
